Ohio Star
Our “star” block, the Ohio star quilt block, the star that every quilter loves. Learn how to make it, the easy way!
A little bit of history
A really popular block since the mid 1800s, that is known by many names, depending on geographic location or time period. A multi-color variation was known as Variable Star in the East, and in the West during the mid-1800s when the annexation of Texas was a political issue it became known as Lone Star, and Texas Star.
This block was also known by the political slogan Tippecanoe and Tyler Too, after the 1840 presidential campaign slogan of William Henry Harrison and John Tyler. Harrison had become known for his 1811 victory against the Indians in the battle of Tippecanoe, so during the campaigning of 1839 and 1840, which was the first in American history with slogans and songs, “Tippecanoe and Tyler too” was the popular slogan associated with Harrison and Tyler.
Cutting instructions for the Ohio star quilt block
Always be careful of the colors you are choosing. They can easily mess up your block (or quilt) or on the contrary, make it shine! I prefer to make a test block before cutting pieces for the whole quilt. It makes me more confident to continue and make the whole thing.
And always remember FINISHED SIZE means the size it will be in a completed quilt. The measurements given already have the ¼ inch allowance included.

Block variations
Ohio Star quilt block has a some variations that are also really beautiful to make. You can try some of them by using more than two different fabrics and being extra careful with what you cut prior to sewing the block.
