union square tutorial

Union Square

Making this block was so fun, that I decided to make a new quilt with this block, honoring the history behind it. The perfect geometry and harmony behind it is really fascinating for me.

There are many alternative block named after the same quilt block name, but here I am making the original one.

A Little bit of History

A variation of the “saw-tooth” (or some say the Bear Paw) patchwork, this lovely quilt was made for a bride-to-be and named “Union Square” because at that time there was a great deal of excited talk about Mr. Lincoln and the saving of the Union.

Cutting Instructions for the Union Square quilt block

Remember that FINISHED SIZE means the size it will be in a completed quilt. The measurements given already have the ¼ inch allowance included.

You should be really accurate when cutting your pieces, since I don’t usually square up my Half Square Triangles, so the measurements included are not meant to be squared-up after sewing.

The exact variations of the block I am making are pictured below, and they are using 3 fabrics instead of the traditional 2-colored block. They are as beautiful as the original one.
